Hptm. Hans Ehlers of I./JG 1, dives through a formation of Boeing B-17s in the spring of 1943. Ehlers was credited with 54 victories, including 20 4-engined bombers and 11 victories in the east. In April of 1944 Hptm. Ehlers took over as Gruppenkommandur of I./JG 1. He was awarded the Knights Cross in September 1944.
Ehlers met his fate during the Ardennes Offensive. On December 27, 1944 while leading the Gruppe on a mission in support of ground troops Ehlers and I./JG 1 were jumped by Mustangs of the 364th and 352nd Fighter Groups. In the ensuing combat 12 Fw 190s were shot out of the sky. Hans Ehlers died when his Fw 190A-8 crashed into the snow covered landscape near Bereborn/Eifel.
