Glossary
For those of you new to the world of art collecting here are some definitions of commonly used words
Limited Edition Print:
A high quality reproduction of an original painting printed on a heavy acid-free paper stock and signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, no more limited edition prints of that image can be produced making the print valuable on the resale or "secondary market." This especially so with Artist's Proofs.
Artist's Proofs:
Additional prints of the limited edition print run, they are given the notation "AP" and then the edition number eg,1/50 traditionally the first few good prints off the press, personally "proofed" for quality by the artist and signed. Basically, a small sub-edition, usually 10% of the limited edition. If there are 100LE prints there will be 10AP prints.
Giclée
individually printed reproductions of a painting on canvas. Giclées are usually released as extremely limited editions of between 25 and 100 prints. They are signed, numbered and authenticated by the artist and because they are canvas should be framed like the original painting, without glass.
Signature:
An original signature and edition number written on the print in pencil by the artist and sometimes by a person related to the subject of the artwork
Certificate of Authenticity:
A document which states the print title, artist, and certificate number, it guarantees that the print is authentic and valuable and has been approved by the artist. Unauthorized or black market reproductions will not have one and are valueless.
Remarque:
A small sketch or drawing on the margin of the print done by the artist of the original painting.
