Lt. Urban "Ben" Drew of the 361st FG pursues a Bf 109 from III./JG 53during an August 25, 1944 mission to Rostock. Flight-leader Drew was flying "Suzy-G", Frank Glankler’s veteran P-51B Mustang, instead of his "Detroit Miss" due to a faulty supercharger detected in his Mustang after take-off. Drew and the German pilot engaged in a drawn-out game of chase, both spiraling downward until the Bf 109 finally had to pull out. Though only one of the four guns of the P-51 was firing, Ben Drew managed to take out the enemy aircraft after it broke away.

Troy painted "The Katzenjammer Kid" for the cover of Ben Drew: The Katzenjammer Ace, a biography on Drew authored by R.R. Powell and Drew. A limited number copies of this book signed by Drew, the author, and the artist are available from Stardust Studios.

"First Encounter" © Troy White, Oil on Canvas, 44" x 36"
(Also available as a 5x7 notecard. See Note Cards for more information.)

The 309th FS of the 31st FG was scrambled on August 8, 1942 from its base at Westhamnett, Sussex in England and vectored to Shorelam. The Mk V Spitfires ran into Focke-wulf Fw 190s from III./JG2 "Richtofen" and engaged them over the Channel. Captain Harrison Thyng damaged one of the German fighters, and thus became the first pilot in the 8th Air Force to enter a claim against the Luftwaffe. In November of 1942, the 8th AF dispatched the 31st FG to North Africa to help support Operation "Torch". Captain Thyng went on the become America’s most diversified Ace. His six victories in WWII included French (Vichy), Italian, German, and Japanese aircraft. He served with the 4th FIW as a colonel in Korea and shot down five Russian built MiGs to become America’s 16th Jet Ace.
