A Douglas C-47 from the 21st Troop Carrier Squadron, 374th Troop Carrier Wing, lifts off of a small pierced steel planking (PSP) airfield in Korea. The C-47 was the work horse of the second world war. When war broke out on the Korean peninsula they were pressed into service once again. Their ability to operate out of small unimproved strips proved to be an edge over the four-engined, tricycle geared C-54. Because their home base changed so often, the C-47s of the 21st Troop Carrier Squadron were nicknamed the "Kyushu Gypsies".
