Lt. Col. J.C.  Meyer joined the USAAF in 1939 and after a stint as a flight instructor flew P-40s on North Atlantic convoy patrol duties out of Iceland. He returned to the states in 1943, was assigned to the 352nd FG and began training for combat in the P-47 Thunderbolt as CO of the 487th FS. The 352nd FG deployed to England and began flying missions in September of 1943. Meyer was the first pilot in the group to score a victory when he downed an Me 109 and probably destroyed a second on November 26, 1943.

Major J.C. Meyer does some hand flying with some of his 487th FS P-47 pilots. R-L: Lt. Duncan Donahue, Lt. Ralph Hamilton, Captain Virgil Meroney and J.C. Meyer.

J.C. Meyer scored four victories in his P-47D "Lambie" and five and a half victories in his P-51B "Lambie II".

Two photos of "Petie 2nd"  P-51D 44-14151 taken at Bodney in September 1944. All of Meyer's personal aircraft were coded HO-M.    Included in the Colonel's final WWII score of 24 air and 15 ground victories was an Arado Ar-234 Jet bomber. He downed the speedy aircraft on December 31, 1944.

Lt. Col Meyer points to his latest victory on Petie 2nd's scoreboard. Meyer' highest scoring day came on September 11, 1944 when he used Lt. Bill "Flaps" Fowler' s "Stardust", HO-F to down 3 Me 109s and an FW 190. "Stardust" is pictured above being serviced at Bodney during the summer of 1944.

After the war JC remained in the Air Force. He was CO of the 4th FIW when they deployed to Korea in the autumn of 1950. He was one of the first pilots to score an air-to-air victory with the F-86 Sabre when he destroyed a MiG 15 on 22 December 1950.

On April 19, 1951 Meyer scored the last victories of his career when he shot one MiG and damaged another while flying F-86A 49-1319 which was the same F-86A that Capt. James Jabara used to score a double on 20 May 1951 to become the world's first Jet vs. Jet ace. Meyer attained the rank of General by 1959 and would earn four stars and be in charge of the Strategic Air Command before he retired in 1974. Photos copyright ©352nd FG Association via Sam Sox .
