In the Studio
"Reflejo Dos/Time Warp" Project © Troy White, 2009-10.
After completing Springtime for Hitler and Germany, it was time to complete the studio which meant installing proper lights and painting it inside and out. Finally in April I was able to start some sketches for a few ideas I have been considering for some time. The first to be sketched onto canvas is Reflejo Dos / Time Warp. It is a surrealistic project in which the viewer sees the past reflected in a modern glass edifice in downtown Montevideo. The idea came to me when a few months ago I saw a 100 plus year old building reflected in the Santander Bank building in la Cuidad Vieja on la Aveneda 18 de Julio next to la Plaza del Entrevero.
Santander Bank, Montevideo
I thought it would be interesting to see the Graf Zeppelin passing over the reflection old building, thus the modern building becomes a bit of a time portal. From 1975 to 1977 I painted a series of Zeppelin paintings which were inspired by the fact that I had lived near Lakehurst, NJ where the Zeppelin Hindenburg crashed. That area of New Jersey is still rich in airship lore. The title of this new painting reflects not only the surrealistic nature of the project but also my former body of work and my long-time interest in reflections.

... after a couple more work blocks.
...I decided to save the Graf Zeppelin for last, I'm currently having fun painting the reflections of the Victorian buildings.
I have been working from right to left and from top to bottom. I am right handed so I have stopped to let it dry a bit.
Here is the painting quite a few work blocks later.
The above photo was taken in late afternoon light.
Below are some previous reflective paintings to reflect on...
"Pond Swoop" which was completed in late 2002 is an example of the fun that can be had with reflections.
"Reflejo Uruguay" from 2004, I painted this during my honeymoon, it was the reflection in a puddle in front of our house.
