Captain Roger Conant of VMF-215 taxis out of Torokina on Bougainville Island in the Solomons after refuelling during an escort mission on January 14, 1944. While Escorting SBD Dauntless and TBF Avenger bombers en route to Rabaul he downed a Japanese Zero fighter contributing to the total of 19 kills for the Day By VMF 215. Conant finished the war with 6 confirmed victories and 3 probables. He went on to be a test pilot for McDonnell-Douglas post war.
